Why The Christmas Holiday is a Good Time to Hire

Posted 27th Dec 2017

Did you know that Christmas is a fantastic time of year for job hunting and hiring? While the world goes crazy buying presents, making merry, and regretting drinking too much at the office party, many job hunters and hiring managers are also busying themselves with the end of year recruitment drive - the thing so few people realise exists, but that can give those with the knowledge a little bit of a head start.

The candidate pool is much smaller than normal…

It can be a huge mistake of the winter job hunter to assume that no one hires at Christmas. This means many would be applicants never consider uploading their CV or beginning earnest job searching until the New Year. Recruiters and hiring managers never really stop! Until Santa’s sleigh bells can be heard overhead, job offers can be made, so never put off what could be a golden opportunity to be considered for a dream job whilst everyone else is focusing only on Christmas shopping

Christmas is the greatest time for networking…

There are Christmas parties everywhere you turn and they are filled with people merry on festivities and happy to engage in work chatter. It’s the one time of the year that everyone celebrates together, whether client, employee, or boss, and the best opportunity to expand your network and horizons.

Hiring managers have more time to reflect on applications and interview candidates…

Some might argue that it’s a particularly good time of year for hirers to give some real consideration to a candidate(s)? Especially that sweet spot between Christmas and New year, when the office is either empty or manned by a mere skeleton crew, with not a single project set to start moving forward again until the first week in January.

Money sometimes needs to be spent…

Budgets, and many companies / organisations have them, often must be utilised to the full! If they aren’t, next years’ could be considerably smaller. Some departments seek to spend their allocation in order to justify the next budgetary request and if the budget allows for hiring, organisations can often make sound, considered, and perhaps quicker-than-normal hiring decisions.

Everyone else is Christmas shopping…

While many may, for example, be sitting in a traffic jam thinking about spending their Christmas bonus, you could be one of the few waiting in line to interview for your dream job. As the competition queues for wrapping paper and over-sized Christmas cards, you could be shaking hands with your new boss and accepting the position that will make your 2018 very special.

At the end of the day, if you’ve done all your shopping, wrapped the presents, and plucked the turkey, why not have a look at the job market too and take a punt on that dream vacancy that could just be a surprise Christmas present to yourself!
